Chapter 22

Over And Over

Damon

On Thursday, after Emry and Damon sent the kids home, they had a meeting with Headley and some of the other unit leaders.

“The situation is that demons, mostly Belaya, are fast approaching at the eastern front,” Headley told them from the head of a long mahogany table. “I know we usually provide more time to train novices, but we might not have that privilege anymore. You all need to step up your game.”

“Novices going to the frontline in less than a year? This is crazy!” yelled a soldier that Damon had respect for.

Murmurs of agreement emanated from the crowd.

Headley’s jaw tightened. “I understand your concerns, but it can’t be helped. Intelligence suspects there’s something more nefarious lurking.”

“Like what?” Emry asked.

“We’re not sure yet, but this convergence is too sudden.Perhaps something has fundamentally changed in the demons’ social dynamics, like their leadership.”

“Are they colluding with Tigers again?” blurted a sandy-haired soldier.

Damon despised him for the question, but he couldn’t really blame him. All eyes turned towards Emry. He felt her stiffen next to him, but she didn’t respond. Instead, she just stared back at them challengingly.

“I find it hard to believe.” Headley let out a long exhale. “There’s not much left of the Tigers to pursue.”

“What about other nations?” suggested someone else.

“There’s not enough information to confirm or deny anything. We might send some of you to gather information and fight them off.”

Again, murmurs spread through the crowd.

“In the meantime,”—Headley’s powerful voice silenced them—“I have a mission that needs to be done by Saturday, and I need volunteers. A sixty-year-old man and two girls, both twelve years old, were killed in Egma. It’s been documented that the demons responsible are level two, so I need at least eight people to handle this. Who here wants to take them down and get that big payout?”

Damon didn’t have to look to know Emry had raised her hand. Without thinking, he raised his hand as well. Headley nodded at the pair, and six more hands shot up, one after the other. After dismissing the others, he briefed his volunteers.

“I’m going to arrange a bus for tomorrow night to get you to Egma,” he informed. “But, if any of you are already going home there this weekend, you can leave in the morning and join the mission on Saturday.”

While Emry and Damon were making their way back to the Slayers building, he turned to look at her.

“Come with me to Egma in the morning. We don’t have to wait all day for the bus tomorrow.”

“What?”

Maybe she thought it was inappropriate, but he had to offer. When was the last time she actually left the base for anything other than a mission?

“Do you have any work to do tomorrow?” he asked casually. “Any watches or duties? I can ask one of my friends to cover for you.”

“No, but—”

“Then you don’t have to stay here alone. You can stay with my grandma and me.”

“I don’t know…” She looked apprehensive, pausing at the door. “Are
